The effect of earthquake risk on humanitarian logistics: Bursa

Earthquakes are one of the most devastating disasters in Turkey and being unpredictable and unavoidable in terms of time and location; effective disaster management planning is, therefore, necessary to control the implications of disasters. Optimal positioning of the humanitarian aid facilities is a significant study area for disaster management. In this thesis study, the effects of earthquake magnitude on the selection of locations where the necessary supplies are stored are analyzed. The problem addressed consists of three stages. The first stage is to estimate the number of people who will be affected by the seismic impacts in a selected region by taking into account the past earthquake records. The second stage is to determine the future earthquake risks from these records according to Gutenberg–Richter method. The third stage is to create a two-stage disaster supply logistics by considering the level coverage model. The proposed model has been applied to the location problem of logistics warehouses during the disaster management preparation stage in Bursa.
