A study of English teachers' views about factors affecting the success of English language teaching at public schools: İstanbul-Asia side case

In this study, the purpose was to explore the factors, affecting the success of English Class in English teachers' point of view, working in public schools, the Asia side of İstanbul. This research is a descriptive study, conducted by survey method, one of the quantitive research methods. The following questions were explored: 1. According to English teachers; what are the roles of Education System on the success of English Class? 2. According to English teachers; what are the roles of teachers, teachers' education and evaluation on the success of English Class? 3. According to English teachers; what are the roles of students and their environment on the success of English Class? The participants of the study are 116 English teachers, working in 40 different public schools, the Asia side of İstanbul during the 2015-2016 academic year. The instrument used in this study is a kind of questionnaire, arranged for researching the factors, affecting the success of English Class. The collected research data was converted to computer format and analyzed by using SPSS Version 22. The findings of the study are the followings: While one of the most influential factors is 'education system' on the success of English class, the other most influential one is 'students and their environment'. The demographic properties of teachers (gender, age, professional experiences etc.) have no significant differences on the sights of English class success of teachers.
