The spread of digital literature and its effects on modern literature

Modernism emerged in the early 20th century as an innovative movement that questioned traditional values and norms. Making its mark on literature as well, modernism led to radical changes in both narrative forms and content. However, today—particularly with the rapid advancement of digital technologies—the transformation of literature that began with modernism has gained a new dimension. The growing influence of media and the digitization of literature have introduced new formats such as e-books, digital poetry, hypertexts, and social media, all of which have profoundly affected reading and writing practices. With digitization, literature has gained the potential to surpass traditional boundaries and reach wider audiences. However, this has also led to the emergence of a media-driven culture and the increasing prominence of concepts like postmodernism in our lives. As a result, debates have arisen over whether literature is losing its value or becoming trivialized. Especially on social media platforms, rapidly produced and consumed texts—often lacking literary quality and shaped by the influence of popular literature—have become widespread. Platforms like Wattpad have enabled amateur writers to publish their work easily, raising questions about the preservation of literary values.The challenges that digitization has brought to literature are not limited to the quality of texts. As writers move beyond traditional publishing processes and gain direct access to readers, new debates have emerged around issues such as copyright, editorial oversight, and literary merit. New forms such as hypertexts, gamified literature, and interactive narratives have appeared in literary works, prompting discussions on their effects on writing practices, modes of thinking, and the commodification of narrative. On the reader's side, the unlimited options and access offered by digital platforms have influenced reading habits, attention spans, and attitudes toward texts. This study observes that the process of digital literature and its dissemination has transformed modern literature in both form and content. It is evident that every innovation introduced into our lives—especially through media—has also created a new language in literature, reshaping traditional literary forms and themes. While this transformation contributes to the accessibility and possibilities of literature, it also brings significant concerns regarding the preservation of literary value and the quality of narrative.
