A study on the câize in dîvân literature

In this study with the subject ?A Study on the câize in Dîvân literature? monetary aids and aids in kind received by divan poets from the people protecting art and artist has been discussed. In Ottoman State first sultan then other prominent people within the state protected the art and the artist to the extend varying according to their personalities and sustained this practice till the last periods of the empire. Poets in certain times in their works made the eulogy of those who supported and protected them. In these praises some historic and religious personalities was used as elements of comparison. Poets in their works expressed not only the existing good values of the supporters but also attributes that should have existed in those people. One whose justice, generosity and good management and similar good qualities expressed will take a route to that direction inevitably. In this sense the art had a positeve and canalizing effect on sovereignty. As well as praising their own work, poets asked for help from their supporters expressing their material and immaterial problems. The person to whom the work dedicated evaluated the work depending on his own taste and understanding and awarded according to its success. This awarding not only provided the poet with material opportunities but also gave him honor. All the aids the poets received were called câize. After all the only means by which poets earned their living was not caizes, each of them had their own profession to extend of their ability. The practice of caize which can be considered a kind of copyright got institutionalized today and still survises.
