Tectonic properties and geothermal potential of Southern Diyadin (Ağrı)

Prof. Dr. Onur KÖSE October 2019, 95 pages Diyadin geothermal system is one of the important geothermal areas of Eastern Anatolia. In this geothermal system, there are two geothermal sub-sites, one 6 km southwest of Diyadin (Ağri) district centre (Diyadin geothermal field) and the other 10 km further southwest (Mollakara geothermal field). In the investigations and researches carried out until today, the development of Diyadin geothermal system has been mostly associated with Tendürek volcanism. However, the Diyadin geothermal field and hot springs are not on a tectonic line extending from Diyadin to Tendürek volcano (southeast) but mainly on a tectonic line extending from Diyadin to southwest. In addition, on the current maps showing active tectonic structures of Turkey, there is not any fault that may corresponds to Diyadin geothermal field: in almost all previous studies, there is a lack of detailed tectonic investigations and evaluations for the Diyadin region. Field studies and tectonic evaluations within the scope of this thesis provide data and evidences that potential geothermal fields around Diyadin are independent from Tendürek volcanism and have their own internal dynamics. Within the scope of this thesis, a detailed tectonic mapping study and the relations of geothermal resources with tectonic structures have been carried out not only in the known geothermal field but also in the whole area covering the southern region of Diyadin district centre. Thus, a structural data base including also tectonic assessments has been established for the development of an accurate conceptual model of the Diyadin geothermal system.
