Tectonic features and geothermal potential of Northern Diyadin (Ağrı)

Prof. Dr. Onur KÖSE October 2019, 67 pages Almost every region of Turkey is rich in geothermal resources. Diyadin town (Ağrı) which constitutes sole example at Eastern Anatolia Region in terms of use of geothermal energy on district heating, is taken into consideration as one of the major geothermal fields in Turkey. The known geothermal field in Diyadin is roughly 6 km southwest of Diyadin downtown and the related hot and mineral water resources are concentrated in a triangular area between the villages of Davut, Dibekli and Göğebakan. The presence of any geothermal field and hot water source in the near-northern part of Diyadin has not been reported in the literature before. In this thesis, the existence of a new geothermal potential site in the near-north of Diyadin district centre has been revealed within the framework of tectonic field investigations and geochemical evaluations of water resources. Within the scope of previous studies, the presence of hot and mineralized waters in the region has been generally associated with Tendürek volcanism. Field studies and tectonic evaluations conducted within the scope of this thesis indicate that potential geothermal fields around Diyadin are independent of Tendürek volcanism and have their own internal dynamics. This thesis study made an important contribution to the elimination of the lack of literature related to the areas in the near-north of Diyadin and to the existing studies around Diyadin. The data presented in this study is also expected to make a significant contribution to increasing the potential for the transfer of existing geothermal urban heating in Diyadin downtown to nearby districts and Ağrı city centre.
