Costs of natural disasters and earthquakes: Economic effects of vegetable and animal production loss in the 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquake

In recent years, it has been observed that the number and effects of natural disasters have increased due to the effect of global warming. Among the natural disasters that have increased in number in Turkey in recent years, the state has an important role in combating the effects of forest fires, floods and especially earthquakes. It is seen that the February 6, 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquake caused many negative effects on societies and individuals, including physical, social, environmental and economic. In this study, it is emphasized that the provinces in the earthquake zone in Turkey have a significant share in vegetable and fruit production, and that the supply chain was negatively affected by the decrease in agricultural production after the earthquake, and that due to the delayed delivery of aid to rural areas after the earthquake, the animals in that region perished and the livestock farming was significantly damaged by the earthquake. Agriculture and livestock farming were negatively affected by the recent earthquake, and it can be said that the supply chain disruption and the lack of supply resulting from the decrease in production amount may also have a negative impact on food prices. In this regard, it is necessary to change the roles and functions of states through social and financial measures and to undertake the consequences of disasters.
