Abstract (EN)
As we approach to the 21st Century, the principles of the sustainable urbanism, construction and architecture are widely discussed with the aim of providing a healthier future for man kind. The environmental problems threaten the whole living creatures, their living environments and humanity in a serious way. The technologies developed to provide a better life cause hazardous side effects, however, they expect to serve the humanity to live in a healthier environment. Keeping these in mind, sustainable and environmentally sensitive architectural concept has developed new strategies. In Introduction, as the results of technological developments and the needs, the damage given to the nature is evaluated. In Chapter 2, the historical development of environmentally sensitive architecture is briefly given and the importance of this concept is discussed. Furthermore, instead of using fossil energy sources, renewable energy sources such as solar and wind energies are studied. These renewable energy sources are evaluated in term of architecture. Moreover, in this chapter, the sensitivity parameters for buildings being compatible to the nature are itemised. In Chapter 3, the design criteria for being compatible to nature are investigated. First, outside conditions of the building being subjected to the environmental threat is evaluated. Then during designed examples, the use of climatic data such as topographic conditions, natural heating, cooling and day-lighting are studied in details. Furthermore, the special cases such as atrium and greenhouses are studied.vnı In Chapter 4, examples of buildings, built using high technology compatible to the nature, are studied both in the World and Turkey. Despite being climatically favourable, the low number of the examples in Turkey became a limit for the study. In the conclusion part of this thesis, the parameters of the environmentally sensitive buildings are critically evaluated and for the development and wide applications of this technology in Turkey are proposed.
