Investigation on connection status of the babies and the fathers introduced each other in the first time after birth and evaluation of communication patterns

Abstract (EN)
The study was conducted as a semi-experimental design for investigating Attachment and communication patterns of fathers introduced to their newborns for he first time after birth. The research was conducted with 50 fathers by face to face meeting in delivery rooms and maternity wards in Health Sciences University Adana Numune Education and Research Hospital and Adana Gynecology and Children Diseases Hospital between October 2016-December 2016. Communications of fathers and newborns given in their laps were observed in experimental group after birth and time of keeping newborns on their laps were determined by a chronometer. In control group, routine implication of hospital was occurred. Communication of fathers with their babies, attachments and attending to care of their newborns were investigated 1 month after study. Mean age of fathers is 31.96±5.14. 46 (92%) of fathers' wives became pregnant planned, 35 (70%) newborns were born with ceserean section, 14 (28%) newborns were born with vaginal delivery and 1 (2%) newborn was born under spinal anesthesia were determined. Of fathers 29 (58%) participated to the study stated that they were ready for fatherhood everytime but they could not help to their wives because of workload and 21 (42%) of them would attend lovingly and willingly to cares of their newborns. It was detemined that 48% of fathers took on lap their newborns attended often to their cares while 84% of fathers did not took on lap their newborns attended to their cares rarely or not at all. A significant correlation was found between fathers' taking their newborns on their laps and attending to care (p<0.05). Introducing newborns to their fathers shortly after birth and given on lap to their fathers are determined as a significant finding for attachment between babies and fathers in further periods. Nurses play an important role in supporting the father in this regard. Key words: Father, baby, bonding, nurse, communication
