ABSTRACT EFFECTS OF FOREIGN THREATS ON MILITARY EXPENDITURE: TURKEY-GREECE CASE Hakkı Bahadır Öztürk Department of Management Supervisor: AsstProf.Levent Akdeniz July 2004 This thesis analyzes the effects of foreign threats on military spending and mainly, it researches the rivalry between Turkey and Greece. Granger Causality (1987) is used as methodology and data covers the time period 1977-2003. The model is based on the studies, which researches arms race. There is no agreement reached in literature, which researches the arms race between these two countries, although many studies accept that the foreign threat is one of the determiners of demand for military expenditure. The results indicate that Turkey military spending is Granger caused by Greek military expenditures, which represents perceived foreign threat.
