A research on the relationship between emotional intelligence and narcissism

In todays rapidly changing pace of life, it is not possible for individuals to achieve success and to find solutions to problems only with cognitive intelligence. Emotional intelligence's ability to understand, control and empathize with emotions is a complementary part of cognitive intelligence for individuals. In modern world, it is seen that narcissistic individuals increase with the increase of individuality. It is predicted that narcissism will benefit employees and the organization if it is kept under control in organizations. Narcissistic individuals, who have captivating rhetoric and attractive leadership qualities, seem to have high emotional skills when their ability to manipulate others is considered. Therefore, the study examined the relationship between these two important issues. Questionnaire distributed to 309 employees in the manufacturing sector in Denizli province. Acording to results, a significant and positive relationship was observed between emotional intelligence and narcissism. At the same time, emotional intelligence showed a significant relationship with gender and educational status and narcissism was showed a significant relationship with to age and gender. In line with the third objective of the study, emotional intelligence and narcissism characteristics of white-collar workers were examined according to whether they were managers or not. According to the difference between managers and non-managers in the use of emotions dimension of emotional intelligence, managers are more skilled in the use of emotions than non-managers. According to the difference between managers and non managers with the authority dimension of narcissism, managers are more authoritarian than non-managers.
