Abstract (EN)
The aim of this study is to examine the predictive roles of self-esteem and marital satisfaction in parent–child relationships among married individuals. In the context of family dynamics, psychosocial characteristics such as self-perception and relational satisfaction are considered essential dimensions that influence parenting practices and emotional bonds with children. Drawing upon theoretical and empirical findings in the field of family psychology, this research seeks to explore how individual and relational well-being among parents contributes to the quality of their interactions with their children. The study was conducted using a relational screening model, and the sample consisted of 304 married individuals living in Turkey. Three standardized measurement tools were utilized for data collection: the Parent–Child Relationship Scale (PCRS), the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), and the Marital Satisfaction Scale (MSS). The internal consistency of each scale was evaluated using Cronbach's alpha coefficients, and descriptive statistics were calculated. Pearson correlation analysis, standard multiple regression, and hierarchical regression analyses were conducted to test the hypotheses. The findings revealed significant negative correlations between parent–child relationship scores and both self-esteem and marital satisfaction levels. The multiple regression analysis showed that both self-esteem and marital satisfaction significantly predicted the quality of parent–child relationships. Moreover, hierarchical regression analysis demonstrated that the addition of marital satisfaction to the model after self-esteem significantly increased the explained variance. These results suggest that higher levels of self-esteem and marital satisfaction are associated with more positive and supportive parent–child interactions. In light of these findings, it is evident that psychosocial resources within the family play a crucial role in shaping the quality of the parent–child bond. Parents with greater self-worth and relational contentment tend to engage more effectively and empathetically with their children. These findings are consistent with existing literature suggesting that individual psychological well-being and relational harmony are key predictors of healthy parenting and family functioning. The implications of the study are discussed in terms of practical applications for family counselors, psychological practitioners, and educational institutions. Suggestions are provided to improve parental self-esteem and marital adjustment through individual and couple interventions. Limitations of the study include the use of self-report measures and a cross-sectional design, which restricts causal interpretations. Recommendations for future research include longitudinal studies, inclusion of children's perspectives, and cultural comparisons to broaden the understanding of family processes in diverse settings. In conclusion, this study contributes to the literature by emphasizing the importance of intrapersonal and interpersonal well-being in parental functioning. By identifying self-esteem and marital satisfaction as key predictors of parent–child relationship quality, the research underscores the need for holistic and systemic approaches to family support and development programs.
