Investigation of parents' perceptions towards physical education lesson and teachers through metaphors

The aim of this research is to examine the metaphorical perceptions of middle and high school student 'parents towards physical education lesson and teacher. The case study design, one of the qualitative research methods, was used in the study. The study group of the research consists of 142 parents, 76 of whom are woman and 66 of whom are male, of secondary and high school students who is studying in the province of Burdur. The data of the research were obtained by completing the sentences "Physical education lesson...is like, because ……" and "Physical education teacher... is like, because ……". Content analysis method was used in the analysis of the data collected within the scope of the research. In the analysis and classification of the data: the stage of sorting, compilation stage of sample metaphor justifications, category (theme) development stage, and validity and reliability stages were followed. While a total of 103 metaphors were produced for the physical education lesson, 101 metaphors were produced for teacher of physical education. As a result of the analysis of the data, the metaphors produced by the parents for the physical education course were classified under 8 themes. Themes are; Health-enhancing lesson, entertaining and relaxing lesson, all-round lesson, empty and unnecessary lesson, discipline-winning lesson, gathering, discovering and directing different talents, free environment and loved lesson. According to the number of uses for physical education lesson; Metaphors such as "tree (5), drug (4), health (3), entertainment (3) and bird (3)" were used. The metaphors produced by the parents toward the physical education teacher were classified under 9 themes. Themes are versatile, entertainer and relaxing, energetic and active personality, the difference ,physical power element, discoverer and guide, providing leader and discipline, student-friendly, health-gaining. For a physical education teacher, according to the number of usage; commonly used metaphors are "doctor (5), friend (4), lion (3), atom ant (2), gardener (2)". As a result; It can be said that the perceptions of the parents participating in the research towards the physical education sports lesson and its teacher are positive.
