Abstract (EN)
This thesis examines how the telegraph, as a crucial component of modernization in communication technologies, was adopted and expanded in the Edirne Province of the Ottoman Empire. Between 1855 and 1871, the use of the telegraph in Edirne significantly strengthened the communication network between the central and local administrations of the Ottoman State. The study emphasizes that the introduction of the telegraph in Ottoman territories coincided with the Crimean War and that the telegraph was rapidly utilized for military and administrative purposes during this period. The thesis provides a detailed analysis of the telegraph investments made to address the Ottoman Empire's backwardness in communication. It explores the challenges faced during the construction and expansion of telegraph lines, the technologies employed, and the role of Ottoman bureaucracy in this process. Due to its strategic position in the Balkans, the Edirne Province became a focal point for the concentration of telegraph lines within the Ottoman Empire. In this context, the study discusses the establishment, operation, and significance of telegraph lines in Edirne within the Ottoman administration. The contributions of the telegraph to the Ottoman Empire's modernization efforts are particularly evaluated through its implementations in key regions like Edirne. This study, utilizing archival documents and historical sources, demonstrates how the telegraph was perceived as a novel innovation within the Ottoman Empire and how this innovation was embraced at the local level. The technological changes introduced by the telegraph significantly altered the communication habits and administrative processes of Ottoman society. In conclusion, the case of the Edirne Province illustrates that the spread of the telegraph in the Ottoman Empire was part of a broader modernization effort.
