Abstract (EN)

Background and Aim: The aim of the study is to determine the effect of lower extremity compression tights usage on running-based anaerobic sprint test performance in young male basketball players. Twenty male basketball players were included in the study (age: 16.5±0.5 years, height: 176.8±5.71 cm, bw: 68.5±8.98 kg, basketball experience: 2.35±0.49 years). Material and Methods: The players participated in the Running-Based Anaerobic Sprint Test (RAST), consisting of 6 x 35 m sprints with a 10-second interval, wearing either regular shorts or compression tights, with a one-week interval between the two conditions. Prior to each test, a 24-hour dietary record was used to calculate the total calorie intake and the percentage of calories derived from carbohydrates. This was done to eliminate performance differences that could arise from changes in dietary habits. Additionally, the Hooper Index was employed before each test to account for differences in fatigue levels among athletes, which could impact performance variations. The Running-Based Anaerobic Sprint Test (RAST) was conducted using a photocell from the Newtest Powertimer brand (300 Series, Oy, Finland). After each RAST, maximum power (Pmax), minimum power (Pmin), average power (AP), and fatigue index (FI) values were automatically determined using the software of the photoelectric cell. Additionally, the perceived exertion level after each RAST was assessed using the Borg Scale (20-point system). Results: The results of the paired-samples T-test indicated that there was no statistically significant difference (p>0.05) between the arithmetic means obtained from the two different test sessions. Conclusion: Within the scope of the study, it can be stated that the use of lower extremity compression tights did not have a significant impact on RAST performance of young basketball players. It is worth considering that applying the study design to more experienced basketball players after several familiarization sessions with compression tights could yield different results.
