Abstract (EN)

The study examines how the gender order in the urban and rural spaces of modern Egypt and the continuities and changes in the roles of Egyptian women were represented in the Egyptian cinema of the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. Assuming that life resembles art, it is simple to see how women carried out their roles and what duties were put on males, and the actions taken by women in support of feminism and gender equality. In order to determine the specific position on gendered concepts throughout the period between the early 1950s and the late 1970s, both in the Egyptian cinema and society, this study will analyze ten films in which the famous Egyptian actress Faten Hamama stars. As a result of this study and analysis of Faten Hamama's films, it can be concluded that Egyptian women, whether in cities or rural areas, have been separated from men and denied several rights on the social, economic, political, educational and other levels. Although it appears that urban Egyptian women may obtain their rights relatively better than rural Egyptian women, even urban women suffer from discrimination and they are also deprived of some of their rights at various levels.
