IV SUMMARY Master Thesis DETERMINATION OF THE RADIOACTIVITY LEWL IN DRINKING AND USAGE WATER IN ELAZI? AND ITS SURROUNDS * Cumhur CANBAZO?LU Fırat University Institute of Science, Physics Department 1998, Page: 111 In this study, water sediments which prepared using water precipitation by evaporation method are counted by using mainly Low Level Alpha Counter with suitable scintillators comparison to Geiger Müller tube, Nal(Tl) Scintillation Counter, Surface Barrier Silicon Semiconductor detector and Gas Proportional Counter, and the results are mentioned. Hence, the mean counts for alpha (a) and beta (P) activities are found to be 0.0968 ± 0.0360 Bq/lt and 0.1562 ± 0.0395 Bq/lt over district area, respectively. Using the results, the variation of the level of a and P radioactivities in Elazığ and its surrounds is mapped. The obtained results are compared to the limits given by World Health Organisation (WHO), Turkish Standard Institute (TSE) and Istanbul Water and Sewer System Management (ISKI). Since these results are found to be under the limits, the a and (3 radioactivities in Elazığ water are not hazardous for human being in this region.
