Abstract (EN)

This study aims to examine the relationship between Javanese Islamic spirituality and the thought of the Indonesian thinker Raden Ngabehi Ronggowarsito. The research discusses the historical development of Javanese Islam, its fundamental spiritual concepts, and Ronggowarsito’s position within this tradition. Particular attention is given to how the interaction between the universal teachings of Islam and the local values of Javanese culture was interpreted and recontextualized in Ronggowarsito’s works. This research is a library-based study employing a qualitative research method. Historical, Sufi, and anthropological approaches to religion were applied in the analysis. The primary data were obtained from Ronggowarsito’s major works, particularly Serat Wirid Hidayat Jati, Serat Kalatidha, and Serat Sabdajati, and were supplemented by relevant books, journal articles, theses, and other academic sources. The collected data were analyzed using an inductive approach. The findings reveal that Ronggowarsito was one of the most influential figures in shaping the spirituality of Javanese Islam. His intellectual framework represents a distinctive synthesis that integrates the fundamental teachings of classical Islamic Sufism with the symbolic language and spiritual traditions of Javanese culture. Concepts such as Wahdat al-Wujud, Martabat Tujuh (The Seven Grades of Being), Nur Muhammadi, Sangkan Paraning Dumadi, and Manunggaling Kawula Gusti were reinterpreted by Ronggowarsito within a local cultural context. The study also demonstrates that his doctrine of Eling lan Waspada (“Remembrance and Vigilance”) functions as an important ethical principle that promotes personal morality, social responsibility, and spiritual awareness. In conclusion, Ronggowarsito’s thought developed a spiritual framework that preserved the principle of tawhid while remaining compatible with local cultural values. This approach continues to serve as an important intellectual legacy that contributes to religious moderation, cultural pluralism, and the preservation of Indonesia’s multicultural social fabric.
