Enhancing maize production resilience to climate change through smart agricultural practices: The case of Shebelle/ Ethiopia

Abstract (EN)
Climate change poses significant threats to agricultural sector worldwide, with Ethiopia being particularly vulnerable due to its reliance on climate-sensitive sectors such as agriculture. This study analyzes the resilience of maize production to climate change in the Shebelle region of Ethiopia through the adoption of smart agricultural practices. This research highlights important climate change consequences on maize productivity, including erractic rainfall patterns, rising temperatures, water scarcity and changing pest dynamics, by utilizing a combination of literature evaluation, field surveys, and data analysis. CSA practices such as intercropping, manure application, water management practices, crop rotation and irrigation were found to improve resilience by enhancing soil moisture retention, lowering erosion, and encouraging sustainable land use. Results shows that the implementing of these CSA practices not only mitigates the negative effects of climate change but also increases productivity and income for local farmers. Additionally, the research indicates the socio-economic aspects influencing farmers' adoption of CSA practices, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions to improve education, access to extension services, and financial resources. This thesis contributes to the understanding of climate change adaptation in Ethiopian agriculture and offers practical recommendations for policymakers and practitioners to enhance the resilience of maize producing systems. The implementation of CSA practices is suggested as a viable strategy to safeguard food security and maintain rural livelihoods in the face of escalating climate challenges. It recommends and supports mechanisms to facilitate the widespread adoption of smart agriculture practices among smallholder farmers in the Shebelle region.
