The perception of familial relations in adolescents according to a number of variables

This study was performed to investigate the perception of familial relations inadolescents according to a number of variables.The sampling group was constructed from adolescents continuing their education at 7thand 10th classes in years 2004 and 2005 in Altındağ, Yenimahalle and Sincan, which areamong the central counties of Ankara ,and their mothers. In order to assess if the perceptionof familial relations in adolescents changes according to a number of variables, the ?FamilyAssessment Device? developed by Bulut (1990) was utilized. To assess the output of FamilyAssessment Device, x² and Mann-Whitney tests were applied to adolescents,with which meansubcriteria scores of adolescents and their mothers are compared. A Personal InformationForm was put in the first part of questionnaire. In this form students were asked about theirsexes, dates of birth, years at school, numbers of siblings, birth orders, whether their parentswere alive, whether they were own parents, years of age of parents, and education andoccupations of parents.The study indicates that males are more successful in problem solving, and that oneshaving one sibling could more easily overcome problems. It has been found that adolescentsolder than 15 years of age could more easily communicate and express their feelings.Moreover, it has been found that adolescents whose mothers were literate or elementarywere more successful in communicating , while those having high school graduate motherswere found to express themselves with more ease. Those being first children were found to bemore successful in general functions. A singnificant difference between adolescents and theirmothers was found in problem solving and communicating.
