Armenian Church and Armenians (Diyarbakır example)

This study focuses on the cultural and religious presence of the Armenians—one of the many communities that have existed on the ancient lands of Anatolia. Conducted in light of the limited public awareness of Armenian culture due to longstanding political controversies, this research aims to shed light on the rightful place and significance of Armenian heritage in the social and cultural history of the region. It offers a comprehensive examination of the beliefs, traditions, and origins of the Armenians in Diyarbakır, a city with deep historical roots. Armenians, who have placed significant emphasis on religious elements in the formation and development of their national identity, have thus established a distinct community based on both their ethnic and religious characteristics. Before adopting Christianity, Armenians practiced Paganism. Even after converting to Christianity, they did not entirely abandon their pagan beliefs and rituals. Instead, they integrated elements of their pagan heritage into Christian practices, creating a unique cultural synthesis. These rituals, particularly evident during festivals and celebrations, form the foundation of many of today's Armenian religious festivities. The Armenian Church, with its distinctive national character, illustrates the strong link between religion and ethnicity. The interweaving of pre-Christian pagan beliefs and practices with the historical development of the Armenian Church has ensured the transmission of this cultural heritage to the present day. For this reason, in order to present rational results by conducting this research on the religious and cultural lives of Armenians (Gregorian, Catholic and Protestant), the richness of the city of Diyarbakir, which has a historical accumulation dating back centuries, in terms of "Armenians and the Armenian Church" has been revealed by utilizing various sources. Within the scope of Diyarbakır, the historical and contemporary status of the Armenian Apostolic Church and the socio-cultural life of the Armenian community are explored from a multifaceted perspective. The physical presence of the church in Diyarbakır, the transformations it has undergone, and the meanings it holds for the community are analyzed. In addition, the demographic structure of the Armenian population, their religious practices, efforts to preserve their cultural heritage, and their interactions with the city are examined using various data sets including graphs and tables derived from multiple sources. The study emphasizes that the Armenian Church functions not only as a place of worship but also as a central institution that shapes the identity, memory, and social bonds of the community. In conclusion, this research aims to illuminate the struggles for existence faced by the Armenians of Diyarbakır by analyzing the impact of various historical events on their community and churches over time. It aspires to contribute to a broader understanding of the Armenian heritage in Turkey and to the potential for coexistence among diverse cultures, using Diyarbakır as a case study.
