Abstract (EN)
The ancient city of Erythrai, located in the Ildırı neighborhood of the Çeşme district on the Karaburun Peninsula of Izmir Province, is an important port settlement known as one of the twelve Ionian cities of antiquity. Erythrai's history was shaped by the Persian invasion and subsequent political and economic changes following a period of prosperity that lasted until the early 7th century BC. The city gained its independence during the Hellenistic Period, when Alexander the Great conquered Western Anatolia, and fell under the influence of the Seleucids, the Roman Empire, and the Kingdom of Pergamum at various times. During this historical period, Erythrai achieved economic prosperity, particularly through maritime trade and winemaking. Remains of the city's defensive systems from the Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine periods can be observed uninterruptedly. This study aims to identify and introduce the development of defensive architecture and its architectural features by examining the city's walls, towers and gates. For this purpose, in addition to the historical events of the city, the architectural and military features of the defensive elements of Western Anatolian cities were examined using analogies and the approximate dating of the city's defensive structures was made. Additionally, X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometry (XRF) analysis was conducted to determine the composition of the rocks used in the construction of the city's defenses. The results reveal the influence of the region's geographical conditions on the defensive architecture and the construction of the architectural structures.
