The experienced problems and coping skills of the women which husbands are in the prison: Altındağ Social Service Center example

The purpose of this research is to identify and assess the social problems and needs of women who's receiving social economic support and whose husbands are in the prison. The reason I chose to work on this issue is that there are very few researchers in social work literature. The research was realized between September and October. The life stories of 59 women whose husbands are convicted and in the prison, who have social economic support service from Altındağ social service centre are discussed. In other words, after the husband's entry into prison, the changing life processes and coping experiences in this process have been studied. Quantitative data were gathered by interviewing face-to-face interview form and interview form prepared by the researcher to determine the characteristics of the women benefiting from the social and economic support services provided by the Ministry of Family and Social Policies in Ankara Provincial Directorate and Ankara Altındağ Social Service Centre. In order to be able to use the scale, necessary researcher approval and ethics committee permissions were obtained. The data obtained via the interview form were analysed using the SPSS 15.0 (Statistical Program for Social Sciences) program in a computer environment. When the relationships between the coping styles of the women were examined, statistically significant relationships were found with the most desperate approach, submissive approach and self – confident approach. When we look at the correlations between the characteristics of women and their coping styles, it is seen that the ages of women, working status throughout life, professional support needs, participation in social life, relations with friends, relationship with neighbours and future plans are related to desperate approach. It is seen that there is a relationship between the opinions of women before and after their husbands entering the prison and their opinions about the security of the community, the participation status in social life and the social support search approach scores. It has been determined that women lifetime employment status, their ability to satisfy basic needs before their husbands entering the prison, social security status, satisfaction with the neighbourhood, relatives with neighbours, satisfy their food needs, support period is in relationship with a self – confident approach. It appears that women's lifetime employment status, physical disabilities, social security status, child care problems, and first encounter evaluation with social workers are related to the submissive approach.
