Abstract (EN)

This research aims to examine the role of digital printing technologies and variable data usage in the flexible packaging design process. Digital systems—offering mold-free production, efficiency in low-volume runs, and personalization capabilities—demonstrate significant transformative potential within the flexible packaging industry. In particular, variable data technology enables each package to be differentiated in terms of content, thereby requiring new approaches and solutions within the graphic design process. A qualitative research methodology was employed, combining a literature review with an application-based case study. In the practical implementation, a graphic design incorporating variable data was developed and printed on BOPP-based flexible packaging material using the technical infrastructure of the HP Indigo 20000 digital press. Data fields were managed via HP SmartStream software, enabling each package to be uniquely customized. The scope of this research is limited to a single material type (BOPP) and one digital printing system; other substrates such as metal or glass, as well as different types of printing equipment, were excluded. The study relies on secondary data sources, with no primary data collection methods used beyond the case application. Analyses were conducted through visual content assessment, a design evaluation rubric, and the examination of practical outputs. The sample was determined through purposeful sampling, including both globally executed campaigns and a developed design project. The findings reveal that digital printing and variable data contribute to packaging design across visual, technical, and production-related aspects. This research aims to assess the role of personalized production practices within the field of graphic design and to highlight the creative opportunities presented by digital technologies. As these technologies are expected to gain broader adoption in the future, flexible packaging design is likely to evolve into a more functional, aesthetic, and user-specific solution space.
