Abstract (EN)

IV ABSTRACT PhD Thesis THE EFFECTS OF ETHANOL-GASOLINE BLENDS ON THE ENGINE CHARACTERISTICS AND AIR POLLUTION IN GASOLINE ENGINES HASAN BAYINDIR Fırat University Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences Department of Mechanical Education 1998, Page: 145 In this study, ethanol-gasoline blends were used as an alternative fuel in one cylinder four stroke gasoline engine. A mixer was mounted inside fuel tank in order to prevent phase-seperation. Due to the highlatent vaporising heat of ethanol the inlet manifold was gradually heated. An exhaust gas calorimeter was used to determine the heat loss trough exhaust gas and to obtain the hot water used in heating of manifold. A heat transfer model was developed for the inlet manifold of the engine used in the experiments. In order to increase the comprerion ratio of the engine, the volume of the combustion chamber was kept small & the upper cylinder cover (w?&A) of the engine was produced by casting and then shaping by a CNC machine tool. The experiments were carried out under different loads, with different compreSlion ratios, ignition advances and air fuel ratios using different ethanol-gasoline blends. The experimantal results were compared with each other in sub-groups & in tables and graphics. Exhaust emissions from ethanol-gasoline blends "#»»8 cleaner than gasoline but this blends causes the engine power to decrease relatively. Key Words : Alternative Fuels, Ethanol, Gasoline Engine, Exhaust Emissions
