Abstract (EN)

Infidelity is a significant issue commonly observed in marriages, which can lead to deep conflicts within the relationship. The attachment styles developed during childhood can influence individuals' attitudes and behaviors in romantic relationships during adulthood, particularly their tendency toward infidelity. In this context, the failure to meet relational needs (such as emotional support, attention, and trust) can also be considered an important factor that increases the tendency to cheat. Starting from this point, this study explores whether relational needs play a mediating role in the tendency toward infidelity among married individuals with an insecure-avoidant attachment style. Therefore, the aim of this research is to examine the mediating role of relational needs in the relationship between avoidant attachment and infidelity tendency among married couples. The sample of the study consists of 187 individuals (121 women [64.8%] and 66 men [35.2%]), aged between 30 and 60, who have been married for at least 6 months. A convenience sampling method was used in this study, and data were collected online. To measure avoidant attachment, the "Experiences in Close Relationships – Short Form" was used; to measure relational needs, the "Relational Needs Satisfaction Scale" was used; and to measure the tendency to cheat, the "Infidelity Tendency Scale" was used along with a Demographic Information Form prepared by the researcher. The findings of the study revealed that relational needs (specifically support and protection) do not have a mediating (indirect) effect on the relationship between iv avoidant attachment and the tendency to cheat. The findings were discussed within the scope of academic literature, and suggestions for further research and practice were presented for researchers and mental health professionals.
