The relationship between self construals and self construals similarity of married couples with the marital adjustment and satisfaction

The starting point of the family, which is considered the basic unit of society, is the institution of marriage. There are many factors that affect the continuation of marriages with harmony and satisfaction. This study aims to examine the effect of the self-construal similarity of married couples on marital adjustment and satisfaction. The sample size was calculated by using the G-Power program to reach reliable results, and 150 married couples living in Efeler district in Aydın province, who have been married for at least one year, were included in the sample. Data was collected through individual face-to-face interviews voluntarily. The study utilized a survey as data collection tool that contains the Autonomous-Related Self in Marriage Context Scale, Dyadic Adjustment Scale, Relationship Assessment Scale, and Demographic Information form. The study also conducted multiple linear regression analysis as well as descriptive and relational analyzes following the purpose. According to the findings, while the woman's relationship satisfaction can be significantly predicted with the autonomous-relational similarity, the man's relationship satisfaction can be significantly predicted with the autonomous similarity. In general, both man's and woman's relational or autonomous-relational self construals' positively explain the spouses' marital adjustment and satisfaction. At the same time, the research illustrated that there marital adjustment and relationship satisfaction has a relationship with some socio-demographic variables. Finally, the findings were discussed within the framework of related literature and suggestions were made to both practitioners and researchers of future studies.
