The examination of perceived social support and status of coping with stress in patient with spinal cord injury

The aim of this study is the explain the relationship between perceived social support and status of coping with stres among the patients with spinal cord injury (SCI). Was performed as a correlational study in the relational screening model. The research was conducted between August and October 2017 in Ankara Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Training and Research Hospital in Ankara. 100 patients with SCI were included in the study. In the collection of data; Personal Information Form, The Scale of Ways of Coping With Stress (SWCS) and the Multidimensional Perceived Social Support Scale were applied (MSPSS). The obtained data were analyzed by number, percentage, Mann Whitney U test, Kruskal Wallis test, Spearman correlation with SPSS 21.0 package program in computer environment. A significant positive correlation was found between SWCS self confident approach subscale, optimistic approach subscale and social support research approach subscale with the MSPSS family, friends, special person and total scores (p<0.05). In the results of the study, it was identified that patients with SCI that educational status, working status, marital status, caregiver caused to significant difference on coping with stress (p<0.05). In the conclusion of the study, it was found out that the patients with SCI that age and marital status led to significant difference on perceived social support (p<0.05). Under the light of these result showed that, improving social support and the ability to cope with stress in patients with SCI should be an important part of social work practice.
