Abstract (EN)
The aim of this study is to find out the factors that affect the motivation of the English instructors who are currently employed at the School of Foreign Languages, Department of Basic English, Hacettepe University. To achieve this aim, a questionnaire was used as a data collection instrument. Before administering the questionnaire to the instructors, the pilot study was done to see the reliability of the questionnaire. The questionnaire was applied to 100 instructors at the preparatory school. The analysis and interpretation of the questionnaire were done by descriptive analysis, t-test and ANOVA. The analysis of the data collected has indicated that the instructors are reasonably motivated. Approval by colleagues and administrators, involvement in decision-making but to some extent, autonomy in the class, the success of the students are the intrinsic rewards which outweigh the extrinsic motivators such as, salary, job security, teaching loads, physical condition. The first chapter gives a general background to the study, states its aim and makes some assumptions about it and also it defines the limitations. The second chapter deals with the definition of motivation and its types. Also, it gives information about teacher motivation. In chapter three, methods of data collection and the data collection device have been discussed. The analysis and interpretation of the questionnaire is studied in chapter four. The summary, conclusion and suggestions have been given in chapter five.
