Abstract (EN)
Resveratrol is a polyphenolic compound. Besides having anti-carcinogenic, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, anti-atherogenic, anti-thrombogenic effects it mimicks the effects of exercise, increases the mitochondrial number and function, decreases adiposity and restores exercise tolerance. We aimed to research effects of resveratrol intervention on the myogenin and mTOR levels and effect of the present dose usage on the muscle mass of mice. The study was carried out at the Başkent University Experimental Animal Research Center; 14 young adult Swiss Albino mouse were randomly divided into two groups. Experimental group (n:7) received 20 mg/kg/day resveratrol for 7 consecutive days through intraperitoneal way. At the end of the 7th day, the gastrocnemius muscles were removed, their weights were recorded and are stored at -80ºC for mTOR and myogenin analysis with Elisa method. The average weight of the experimental group was (22.11±3.22 g) statistically lower than the average weight of the control group (28.63±3.80 g) (p<0.05). The experimental groups' average gastrocnemius muscle weight was 0.09±0.03 g, whereas the control groups' was 0.12±0.02 g. The difference was statistically significantly low (p<0.05). mTOR and myogenin average levels were not statistically different (p>0.05). According to the results of this study resveratrol has weight reducing effects without having an obesity model; resveratrol intervention has no protective effect against muscle atrophy. There were no changes in mTOR levels which were expected to decrease during atrophy. Resveratrol effects on muscle tissue is relatively little-studied subject, we need more studies to investigate the effective dose, time and metabolic pahtways on muscle mass.
