Determining the salt stress tolerance of different cotton varieties under in vitro conditions

The study was conducted to examine the effects of the growth parameters in different cotton varieties under the in vitro salt stress. 15 varieties of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.), obtained from Nazilli Cotton Research Institute, (N-342, SC-2079, Şahin 2000, N 84-S, Aydın 110, Ege 7913, Nazilli 92-13, SC-2009, Ege 69, M-39, Maraş 32, Nazilli-87, Nazilli-84, Harem 2 and ES-1) were used. As biotic salt stress, five different salt concentrations (Control, 50, 100, 150, 200 and 250 mM NaCl) were applied in 3 replications, respectively. In the study, the plant height (cm), wet weight of plant (g), dry weight of plant (g), root wet weight (g), root dry weight (g), number of roots (number), root length (cm), node (number), leaf number (number), leaf width (mm), leaf height (mm), branch number (number), and salt tolerance index were examined. Based on the data obtained from the present study, it was observed that varieties of cotton had great differences against different salt stress concentrations. In the light of these statistical findings obtained from this study, N-342, Maraş 32, Harem 2, Nazilli-84, and Nazilli-87 varieties showed salt tolerance in terms of the growth parameters, respectively, and ES-1, Aydın 110, SC 2009, Şahin 2000, M-39 cotton varieties were evaluated as moderate salt tolerance. Cotton Ege 69, SC 2079, Nazilli 92-13, Ege 9713, and N 84-5 varieties were determined as susceptible varieties under salt stress.
