Abstract (EN)
Internet usage has become widespread with the increase in technological developments and has gained an important place in people's lives today. The digital world is involved in various aspects of life such as education, art, politics, and entertainment, providing convenience. It is observed that digitalization, which brings innovations into life, also brings innovations in human relationships. On a relational level, individuals feel the need to share their emotions and behaviours with others. With this need, people have started to experience their romantic relationships in the digital realm over time. Alternative meeting environments are being created for those who cannot find time for social life or flirting due to the rush of life, with the widespread use of social media and dating apps. Alongside the positive aspects of technological developments, types of violence that develop in the digital environment have also begun to emerge. It is observed that instances of cyber violence or harassment are increasing nowadays. This research investigates the experiences of women using dating apps with cyber harassment. The study included 20 women who are 18 years old and older living in Istanbul and who have used the dating application at least once in their lives. A qualitative method was used in the research, in- depth interviews were conducted with the participants, and the obtained data were analyzed using content analysis. The findings of the research identified the participants' motivations, purposes, and disturbing experiences with using dating apps. It was questioned whether instances of cyber harassment occurred, and it was found that generally, participants did not realize they were being harassed while using the app but felt psychologically bad afterward. Within the scope of the study, it was found that the motivations of women using a dating application varied, they used it for entertainment and sexual purposes and were exposed to cyber harassment within the application. They stated that they were generally harassed via messages as cyber harassment and encountered situations such as threats and humiliation. However, this research concluded that people do not fully know what cyber harassment is, do not know what to do when they experience it and how to cope psychologically afterwards. At the same time, it was concluded that despite the negative experiences they had, the participants continued to use their applications, only taking a break from using them for a certain period of time.
