Abstract (EN)

PURPOSE: To investigate the frequency of Alzheimer related dementia in patients with pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PES).MATERIAL AND METHODS: 67 patients with pseudoexfoliation syndromeand 67 control individuals who was similar to the patients group for age, gender and educational background were compared for the possibility of Alzheimer related dementia ( according to the criterias of DSM-IV-TR). The effects of cataract, glaucoma and systemic diseases over the dementia were evaluated in patients with PES and control group.RESULTS: The frequency of Alzheimer related dementia was higher statistically in patients with PES (p=0.0001). The frequency of dementia in patients who had cataract was higher than patients who hadn?t (p=0.0003). There was no association between systemic diseases and dementia (p>0.05). Furthermore, there was no difference for the frequency of dementia between patients who had glaucoma and who hadn?t in patients with PES (p=0.953).CONCLUSION: The statistically significant increased frequency of Alzheimer related dementia in patients with PES is important for a possible association between PES and Alzheimer disease.Key Words: Pseudoexfoliation syndrome, Alzheimer related dementia, Cataract, Glaucoma.
