Knowledge,attıtude and behavıour of students whıch are studyıng on fırst and fourth classes of some departments of gaziantep universıty about cıgarette

This study was planned to determine the smoking level among young university studentsthat constitute Turkey?s future by considering countless harm of smoking. Present study is adescriptive study which is made by a guestionnaire answered by 466 students studied on firstand fourth classes of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Turkish Language and Literatureand Nursing School Deparments on 2005-2006 educational semester.According to results, 11,8 % of female students, 27,9 % of male students and on total20,8 % of students were current smokers (p=0,000). 27,7 % of faculty of engineeringstudents,13,3 % of department of Turkish Literature students and 15,3 % of Nursing Schoolstudents were current smokers (p=0,002) and smoking ratio of engineering students is higherthan of other students. Among the first class students 22,2 % of students and among the fourthclass students 15,8 % of students were smokers (p=0,107). The mean age of starting to smokewas 17,32 ± 1,28 for female; 17,97 ± 2,70 for male (p=0,107).Among students 18,9 % of whose mothers have graduation less than primary school and21,4 % of them whose mothers were more educated and for fathers (p=0,574). 26,1 % ofstudents whose fathers have graduation less than primary school and 20,5 % of studentswhose fathers were graduated from primary school or higher were smokers (p=0,597).Besides , smokers were 20,2 % of students whose parents were together , 26,3 % of studentswhose parents were divorced and 21,4 % of students whose mother or father died (p=0,672).Smokers with a ration of 31,2 % live with friends ,21,7 % live alone and 16,2 % stay atiiidormitory (p=0,006). According to smoking behavior 25,7 % of students that at least oneperson from family smokes, and 7,3 % of them that nobody from family smokes weresmokers (p=0,00).Smokers which is 4,7 % of students have friends that don?t smoke and 23,4 % of themhave at least one friend which smokes(p=0,001).An average expense of 51-100 YTL in month is haven by 54,6 %of smokers and 101-195YTL by 12,4 % of them. When cessation behavior is considered, 36,6 % of smokers try toquit smoking for damages of smoking and 20,9 %of them for following damages of smoking.Smoking behaviour of family members and friends, living places, are determined moreeffective factors for smoking.As a conclusion, students start to smoke on ages between 12-18, smoking of familymembers,friends,living places, departments of students affects the smoking behaviour ofstudents.
