Abstract (EN)
The study was carried out to show the effect of depression and anxiety on the frequency of smoking cessation among women who smoke before pregnancy and as a result of the effect on the respiratory symptoms in the neonatal period between May 2018 and September 2018 with 140 pregnant women who have smoking history before pregnancy at Celal Bayar University Hafsa Sultan Hospital Gynecology and Obstetrics Outpatient Clinic. Nineteen of these women were excluded because they had premature birth (<37 weeks) and one had stillbirth. The study was designed as a prospective study evaluating a group of 120 women. Age of the cases, gestational age, educational level, known additional chronic disease, planned type of birth, duration of smoking, amount of cigarettes consumed daily, number of people living at home, number of smokers in the same household, respiratory status in the newborn period, newborn's hospitalization in the neonatal period due to respiratory problems and the type of delivery was collected by the patient information form. Depression and anxiety scores of women were evaluated with Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale (HAD). Data were analyzed with SPSS 23.00 statistical package program. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics (number, percentage distribution, mean, standard deviation), Spearmen and Pearson Correlation Analysis, t-test and ANOVA. The findings were evaluated at 95% confidence interval and 5% significance level. According to the findings of the study, there were positive and weak relationships between the amount of cigarette consumed before pregnancy and during pregnancy, depression and anxiety. However, it was determined that breathing problems in the newborn period (0-28 days) did not differ according to maternal smoking, exposure to cigarette smoke, depression and anxiety. Considering the harm of maternal smoking in terms of fetus and maternal health, it is suggested that smoking should be discontinued during pregnancy, but depression and anxiety are thought to be preventive in terms of smoking cessation in this period.
