Abstract (EN)

The state of being a woman, in and of itself, gives rise to numerous disadvantages, which intersect with various areas such as immigration, poverty, motherhood, lack of participation in paid employment, and lack of education, thereby creating varying degrees of impact on women's lives. In the specific context of this study, Syrian refugees currently residing in Turkey are the subject of investigation. They find themselves living under significantly different conditions by leaving their families, jobs, education, and lives behind in Syria. Migration presents multifaceted challenges for migrants, and women on the receiving end of these challenges experience significant states of deprivation and transformation. This study focuses on the poverty conditions of Syrian women who have the potential to turn migration into an opportunity in Turkey. Conducted through in-depth interviews with twenty-nine Syrian women living in Ankara, the fieldwork aims to understand the life experiences of these women in Syria and Turkey. The study seeks to identify the intersectional disadvantages in their lives through the lenses of being women, having migrant status, and lacking opportunities. Women who were compelled to abandon their professions and education in their home country now experience poverty in Turkey, both in material and capability terms. The content of the study delves into the detailed examination of the poverty conditions faced by Syrian migrant women, as briefly outlined above.
