Structural analysis and recommendations for the sustainability of traditional bitlis houses

Traditional settlements, the oldest settlement in the world, have often played a decisive role in the history and culture of people. The fact that such residential areas are humansized and have a respectable attitude to nature increases their attractiveness day by day. The increasing crowding of cities, the depreciation of people and the loss of their architectural styles have led people to question the architectural lifestyle towards its history. The fact that traditional residential areas have survived to the present day when examined in the context of sustainability provides a lot of information about history. In particular, the use of local materials has made him sincere and humble. However, one of the biggest problems today is the destruction of too many such residential areas. The correct transformation and use of such residential areas is very important. The fact that residential areas such as the village of Cumalikizik in Bursa and the city of Matera in Italy, which are examined within the scope of this thesis, are topographically and functionally similar to Bitlis, this has been examined as an exemplary transformation project. After examining the importance of traditional residential areas and sample transformation projects, the main purpose of the thesis, the city of Bitlis, was examined. Houses with traditional civil architecture located in the city of Bitlis are examined from the point of view of architectural identity. When examining the architectural identity, it was found that the state of the existing registered structures is extremely destructive. After the structural analysis of traditional Bitlis houses in the context of architectural identity, the existing structural problems that caused the destruction of these structures were identified and addressed by field studies. After the architectural identity and structural problems related to traditional Bitlis houses were identified, architectural solution proposals, which are the most important point for the transformation of these structures, were presented in articles. Thus, a simple structural guide has been created for renovation and restoration works to be carried out on a building scale for civil architectural structures located in the city center of Bitlis.
