Young volleyball players comparison of reaction times between smasher and setter position players

This study was carried out to investigate auditory and visual reaction time of male and female volleyball players aged 15-17 in regard to the smasher and setter positions and analyze their differences.The measurements of volleyball teams were performed on 13 teams and 133 athletes before one day of the first competitions of youth group in Afyonkarahisar. The test done with Power Newtest 2000 device was described to the players in details. To evaluate the Auditory and visual reaction times, measurements were taken three times for each athletes and the best degree was evaluated. The obtained data were analyzed with SPSS 17.0 for Windows program and the dependent variables were performed by Covariance (Ancova) analysis.The average of the right hand visual reaction time was 236 mls in female setter and 248 mls in male setter. The average of the left hand visual reaction time was 211 mls in female setter and 233 mls in male setter. The average of the right hand auditory reaction time was 200 mls in female setter and 206 mls in male setter. The average of the left hand auditory reaction time was 199 mls in female setter and 203 mls in male setter.The average of the right hand visual reaction time was 237 mls in female smasher and 248 mls male smasher. The average of the left hand visual reaction time was 222 mls in female smasher and 227 mls male smasher. The average of the right hand auditory reaction time was 201 mls in female smasher and 187 mls male smasher. The average of the left hand auditory reaction was 199 mls in female smasher and 196 mls male smasher.In conclusion, statically significant differences are found according to the auditory reaction time of right hand between the male setter and male smasher.KEYWORDS: Reaction time, Volleyball, Smasher, Setter.
