Post-operative evaluation of patients with endodontic treatment under general anesthesia: A retrospective research Aydin/Turkey

Purpose: The aim of this thesis study is to retrospectively evaluate the patients aged 15-67 years, who applied for severe anxiety or with special needs, who underwent endodontic treatment under general anesthesia at Aydın Adnan Menderes University Faculty of Dentistry between 2015 and 2022, and to compare and analyze the distribution in terms of the dental treatment of the patients, post-operative pain, analgesic use, nausea-vomiting, bleeding and recovery. Materials and Methods: In this study, the data of patients who underwent endodontic treatment of at least one tooth under general anesthesia between the years 2015-2022 were examined. Post-operative pain, recovery time, post-operative analgesic use, post-operative nausea-vomiting, post-operative bleeding information were obtained from the files of the patients. These data were examined in 2 groups as special needs and healthy patients, and were examined in terms of post-operative complications and the frequency of dental treatments. The data were statistically analysed (p=0.05). Results: 184 patients over the age of 15 who were treated under general anesthesia, 81 of them (44%) were female and 103 (56%) of them were male. Of the patients, 70 (38%) were healthy and 114 (62%) were with special needs. 50.5% of the patients are between the ages of 15-25. The mean operation time of all patients was 214.57±82.36 minutes and the mean recovery time was 15.27±7.00 minutes. When the post-operative complications of the patient groups were examined, there was a statistically significant difference in terms of bleeding (ꭕ2=4.189 , p<0.05) and pain (U=2922.00 , p<0.05). While bleeding is seen in patients with special needs, pain is more common in healthy patients. When the distribution of the procedures performed to the patient groups was examined, the number of anterior region aesthetic restoration, one-sided posterior restoration and three-sided posterior restoration was higher in patients with special needs, while the number of bilateral restorations was higher in healthy patients (ꭕ2=74.877 , p<0.05). Conclusion: The findings of our reasearch revealed that the need for restorative treatment is higher in individuals with special needs than in healthy individuals. Since these individuals are also susceptible to post-operative complications because of their complex systemic diseases, it is important to control their comorbidities and to be followed up for possible complications. In addition, this thesis should be supported by new epidemiological studies, since there are a few studies on the litrature about the evaluation of patients underwent endodontic treatment under general anesthesia.
