Abstract (EN)

The elder tree (Sambucus nigra L.) is an important plant species that has a wide distribution in temperate climates and prefers humid areas. In Turkey, this plant, which exhibits distinct geographical characteristics, plays a significant role in local ecosystems. Easy to cultivate and resistant to harsh climatic conditions, the elder tree is widely used in rural areas. Medically, it has been recognized since ancient times for its immune-boosting properties and its use in treating various diseases. Due to its high vitamin C content and antioxidants, it holds great importance for health. These features have led to an increasing demand for elderberry as a dietary supplement and a natural food coloring agent. In landscape architecture, the elder tree provides both aesthetic and environmental benefits. Its ability to form natural boundaries, contribute to ecosystem balance, and enhance biodiversity makes it a valuable plant. In the face of climate change, it can be considered a crucial resource for preserving green spaces. Morphological analyses conducted in the Van Gevaş district have identified individuals of the elder tree that have the potential to be used as ornamental plants. These examinations highlight not only the plant's aesthetic value but also its environmental benefits. Additionally, biochemical analyses have identified candidate varieties of its fruits that can be used as dietary supplements and natural food colorants. As a result, the elder tree possesses significant potential in both the food and pharmaceutical industries, alongside its aesthetic and ecological benefits. The findings of this study emphasize the importance of elderberry cultivation for economic development and sustainability while demonstrating its suitability for landscape use. The potential of the elder tree to contribute to the conservation of natural habitats and support local economies presents an important opportunity for future research and applications.
