The role of the private tutoring establishment services in the period of university entrance and assessment of the private tutoring establishment services by candidate university students: Case of Antalya

Private tutoring establishments, being the biggest and the most well – known entities in the concept of shadow education, are operated in many countries in the World particularly in Eastern Asian countries. The private tutoring education has especially become prevalent in the education systems which pupils are selected for higher grade education by their participation in nationwide exam(s). The private tutoring establishments, occasionally ordered to be shot down and were converted into private schools since date February 6th 2014, have come under criticism for unbalancing the equality of opportunity and unrecorded profit. The aim of this research is to provide information on various aspects of private tutoring establishments in Turkey. The research is supported by a survey for evaluating pupils' perception of private tutoring establishments, accompanied by information about education systems in European countries and Turkey, education budgets, pupils' accomplishments in international evaluations, shadow education in Turkey and some other countries. In consequence of the research, it is observed that pupils regard private tutoring establishments as a subsidiary element of education, not a substitute of schools, think that they cannot succeed in university entry exams without private tutoring establishments, and attendance fee for private tutoring establishments is clearly a burden on family finance. However, within the light of pupils' answers to survey, it appears that private tutoring establishments are better than school at guiding to success in exams, meets deficiencies of schools, are better at guidance and counseling and turning private tutoring establishments into private schools is redundant.
