The effects of pulsing before and after storage on storage and vase life of cut roses and chrysanthemums

Abstract (EN)

In this study, the effects of water solution with 7% sucrose before and after storage on the storage and vase life of cut flowers of rose (Rosa hybrida L. Magnum and Avalanche) and chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum morifolium Ramat Bacardi and Bacardi Sunny) were investigated. A (Tap water uptaking at 20±2°C for 24 hours, control group), B (After storage 7% sucrose+0,5 ml NaOCl+pH (3,5-5,5 or 5,5-6,5) at 20±2°C for 6 hours, water uptaking) and C (Before storage at 20±2°C for 24 hours, 7% sucrose+0,5 ml NaOCl+pH (3,5-5,5 or 5,5-6,5) water uptaking) applications were made for two years in the cut flowers. Cut flowers were stored in solution (A: in tap water; B and C: 0,5 ml of NaOCl +low pH water) at 4°C under 70-75% relative humidity (RH) conditions for 28 days. Periodic vase life at five different times were observed for 12 days at 20±2oC, 60±10% RH and light intensity of approximately 12 µmol m-2 s-1. Different results were obtained in both years for the investigated parameters such as plant nutrients (% or ppm), relative fresh weight amount (%), vase water uptake (ml day-1 g-1 FW), pH difference and electrical conductivity (µS cm-1) difference in vase solution, relative water content (g), respiratory rate (ml CO2 kg-1 h-1), ethylene production amount (ppm), flower leaf and flower petal color (ho), visual quality (1-5 scale), flower opening (0-5 scale), bending the neck (o), amount of chlorophyll in the leaf (mg L-1), amount of carbohydrate in the flower petal (%), vase life and statistical analysis (JMP, 5.0.1) during storage and vase life in both varieties of cut flowers. It was determined that application C before storage was better for 21 days of wet storage in both cut roses and 28 days of wet storage in both cut chrysanthemums. In addition, application of B after 7 days or 14 days of wet storage in vase life of both cut roses and 14 days or 21 days of wet storage in vase life of both cut chrysanthemums gave positive results. Vase life and quality values of both varieties of cut flowers decreased periodically depending on the storage period.
