Determination of design criteria for the housing requirements to arise in Diyarbakır with the implementation of Southeast Anatolia project

ABSTRACT The general framework of this Ph.D thesis was arranged in seven chapters, each of which have its separate parts. Departing from the Chapter I in which the thesis was defined in its content context, the significance and areas of effect within this study of such concept as problem, purpose, importance, assumption, constraint and method determining the starting point of the theme were explained and advance traces of the probabilities likely to arise in its later stages. The Chapter II examines within an analytical approach in the context of Southeastern Anatolia Project the stages through which the city of Diyarbakır as one of the main components of the subject-matter hereof has passed to our day throughout the historical process. The Southeastern Anatolian Project was examined with all its dimensions in the Chapter in which elaborated into its country-wide and regional effects. It was concluded that the project results will not be confined to the economic dimensions, and they will orient the urban and social structure toward a new form which inexorably will generate a new urbanisation movement in the existing settlements and in the areas to be subsequently allocated for this purpose. In the Chapter IV the context of regional development project pattern (Egypt- Aswan High Dam Project) and the policies of approach to and supply of housing of the countries which have completed or are about to complete the development and restructuration processes were examined. The purpose of the examination of this regional project context was to identify the manner in which the effects of the economic and social structure data on the urbanisation process were used and by which policies they were supported with a view to determine, together with the relevant objective conditions, their reflextion into the housing and settlement. The Chapter V examines the chronology of the existing urbanisation process of the City of Diyarbakır which will enter into the ambit of the effective irrigation areas of Southeastern Anatolian Project and defines the influence of official and inofficial authorities on housing development. The Chapter VI sieves according to their effects the results derived from the preceding chapters of which the scopes and contents were described above. Thus were crystallised the dimensions of the current natures and extents of social, economic, cultural and physical factors to become determinant in the spatial redesign of Diyarbakır taken as an urban conglomeration per se. The Chapter VII synthesizes the avenants from the Chapter VI and from the preceding five, examines them in the context of the effects on the region at large and on Diyarbakır City's urban redesign criteria in particular, and offers a package of conclusions and recommendations.
