Abstract (EN)
This thesis study was conducted to analyze the pharmacopoeia of traditionally used drugs such as garlic powder, turmeric rhizome and grape seed and to evaluate the antiproliferative effectiveness of the extracts obtained from these drugs, both separately and in combination. Numerous studies on these plants confirm that they have significant pharmacological effects. Turmeric and garlic samples were analyzed according to their monographs in the Turkish Pharmacopoeia 2017. However, since there is no Pharmacopoeia monograph of grape seed, it has been analyzed according to the 'General Extract Monograph'. As a result of the pharmacopoeial analysis, the garlic powder sample and the turmeric rhizome sample were not found to be suitable for the pharmacopoeia. Since there is no monograph of the grape seed sample, a clear interpretation could not be made. The antiproliferative effect and cell viability of the extracts prepared from these plants and the mixture of these extracts on human colon cancer cell line CaCO-2 cells were evaluated by MTT test. When looking at the results, the garlic powder sample showed the highest antiproliferative effect, while the turmeric rhizome sample was ineffective. Grape seed sample showed moderate effect. When the extracts were given as a mixture, they antagonized each other's effects. Promising results emerged for the garlic powder sample. Contrary to previous studies, the fact that the turmeric rhizome did not show an anticancer effect was attributed to the lack of sufficient amount of curcumin. Garlic complies with all pharmacopoeial standards except TLC analysis. In terms of TLC analysis, the lack of compliance with the pharmacopoeia was attributed to the lack of standards, materials used or experimental errors.Plants have been used in therapy since ancient times. People think that treatment with herbs is completely safe. Therefore, it is widely used regardless of the amount. However, the random use of plants in this way is not safe for human health. Before individuals use herbal medicine; should be evaluated in terms of existing diseases, medications, pregnancy and allergies. Herbal products should be under the control of the Ministry of Health, and necessary preclinical and clinical studies should be done on them. A monograph should be created for all plants in the pharmacopoeia, and the properties they should have should be specified. It should not be thought that the treatment with herbs is completely harmless, standardized products should be used, they should be purchased from reliable places, and the physician and pharmacist should be consulted.
