Abstract (EN)

Domestic accidents to which children are exposed are an important problem that can result in injury, disability or death. This descriptive study was conducted to diagnose the safety measures for home accidents of children's mothers in the hospital and to evaluate their first aid self-efficacy. The study sample consisted of mothers of children aged 0-4 who received outpatient/inpatient treatment at the Pediatric Service of Nevsehir State Hospital, Pediatric Emergency and Pediatric Outpatient Clinics (n=448). In the study, which was approved by the ethics committee, institutions and mothers, data were collected with the 'Parent and Child Information Form', the 'Scale for Mother's Identification of Safety Measures against Home Accidents in Children aged 0-6 (MISMHA)', and the 'First Aid Self-Efficacy Scale for Home Accidents (FASEHA)'. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, Mann-Whitney U, Kruskal-Wallis (Posthoc Bonferroni) test and Spearman correlation tests. It was determined that the mean scores of the mothers were 154.44±29.92 at MISMHA, and their diagnosis of safety measures in home accidents was at a 'good' level, the mean score of FASEHA was 29.91±14.03, and their first aid self-efficacy in home accidents was determined to be at a 'low' level. It was determined that the scores of the mothers were significantly lower than the other mothers in the presence of an individual whose educational status is literate/primary school graduate, who is not working, who has a son, who lives in a village, in a large family, in a detached house, who perceives his income as low compared to his expenses, whose number of children in the house is 3 or more, and who needs care at home other than the child (p<0.05). It was determined that there was a high positive correlation between the mothers' MISMHA and FASEHA scores (r=0.761; p<.001). It is recommended that pediatric nurses identify children and families who are disadvantaged in terms of home accidents and provide them with effective and adequate first aid training in order to take safety measures before home accidents occur and to intervene appropriately in case of possible home accidents.
