Airline scheduling and comparison of schedule planning in turkish airlines transportation system

Air transportatıon sector with developing technology keeps growing rapidly. Aircraftlighter in volume, which has a wider capacity, engines consume less fuel, safe electronicalequipments, well equipped terminals, safer air space, national and international laws,standards, bilateral agreements, have played a significant role upon the developments whichoccured in air transportation sector.Air transportation in our country is expanding and the trend is growth. Since thedomestic flights were permitted to be held by private companies, to found a company, to getplane and personnel had become easier and with the support of the government and thediscount in fuel costs. Also this growing trend ensured cargo and passenger demand toincrease. However the sector of which growth is continuous and rapid caused capacityproblems which are difficult to be planned. Planning of the fleets includes variety of typesand many aircraft, let them fly when they match to the demand of passengers had become animportant strategy for airlines. Airlines put this strategy into practice by means of theirscheduling departmentsOn the first part of this Thesis, Scheduling strategies, methods, existing schedule typesand the keen interest of the companies over this department examined. On the second part,Scheduling department in airline organization chart, duties, relations with the otherdepartments and Schedule planning process were discussed. On the other hand by means oftaking the international Scheduling meetings and factors affecting scheduling department intocosideration the relations between scheduling and delays were examined.On the last and the third part of the Project, for the sake of supporting the backgroundof the study and examining the scheduling actions a descriptive analysis was held over theresult of the questionnaire which was done among Scheduling planning department of Turkishairlines registered Turkish Civil Aviation.
