The effect of communication skills on the problem solving skills of nurses

While the importance of nurses working in health institutions is great; they are actively involved in the formation of healthy communication environments. Nurses face different problems in their working environments. When nurses develop themselves as individuals with effective problem-solving skills, they can provide more effective service in the direction of protecting and improving the health of society and enhancing the quality of life. The high level of problem-solving skills of nurses plays an important role in increasing the effectiveness of nursing care and treatment by providing successful implementation of the nursing process. In this respect, the robustness of the communication process in the relations of the nurses with their managers, peers, and patients for whom they care will prevent many problems. This study is planned to be descriptive in order to evaluate the communication and problem-solving skills of nurses and to make suggestions to improve these skills. In the study, first of all, the conceptual framework of communication concept and communication in health care, problem-solving, communication and problem-solving in nursing are discussed. In the research, the survey method is used as the data collection technique. Data collection tools are Sociodemographic Information Form, Communication Skills Inventory, and Problem Solving Inventory. In total, data were collected from 302 nurses and it was analyzed in SPSS statistical software package. The data obtained from the study showed that the communication skills of nurses were at a medium level and they perceived themselves sufficient in terms of problem-solving skills. It was seen that communication skills had a positive effect on problem-solving skills.
