Relationship between beliefs of medicines and mother's anxiety and depression parameters in patients with wheezy child and asthma diagnosis

Introduction : Asthma affects the quality of life of children and increases the frequency of depression in mothers with asthmatic children, making it difficult for the child to adapt to asthma treatment. In this research, the relationship between mothers with wheezy or asthmatic children between the ages of 3-10 and their belief in treatment, medication and anxiety and depression status of the mothers are examined. Method: 200 children aged between 3-10 years and their mothers who were followed up with asthma / wheezing for at least 3 months were included in the study. Patient registration form was completed; Beck depression scale, STAI-2 anxiety scale and beliefs about medicine questionnaire (BMQ) were administered to the mothers. The asthma control status of the child was determined by applying respiratory and asthma control test for children. Data were analyzed with SPSS 15.0 (Chicago, IL) statistical package program. Results: Family history of asthma-allergy was found to increase depression in mothers. The effect of BMQ concern score on the presence of depression in the mothers and the effect of birth type and BMQ necessary score on the trait anxiety score of the mothers were significant. The effect of mothers' trait anxiety score on BMQ necessary score and the effect of birth type and Beck depression score on BMQ concern score were significant. BMQ necessary and BMQ concern scores were determined as independent risk factors that affect each other. In controlled and uncontrolled asthma groups, there was a significant difference in terms of mean age and annual frequency of attacks. Conclusion: Prematurity and annual attack frequency were effective in asthma control; mother's belief in medicines or mood was not effective. Family history of asthma-allergy, trait anxiety score and BMQ concern score were found to be effective in maternal depression. Type of delivery, Beck depression and BMQ necessary scores were effective in trait anxiety score. BMQ necessary and concern scores were correlated but not significantly affected by depression and anxiety scores.
