Abstract (EN)
Ibn al-Sîd al-Baṭalyawsī (d. 521/1127) was one of the distinguished figures of the intellectual world of al-Andalus, leaving profound marks in both literary and linguistic sciences. He witnessed the political and intellectual transformations of al-Andalus from the time of the conquests and secured for himself a unique place within the intellectual centers and scholarly milieu that developed during this period. In the first stage of this study, the political background of his era—particularly the cultural contributions of the Umayyads, Almoravids, and Almohads—was examined, followed by an analysis of the Andalusian intellectual climate and the different perspectives regarding al-Baṭalyawsī. The second chapter investigated his life, scholarly personality, and works in detail. Alongside biographical information such as his name, lineage, place of birth, and date of death, attention was given to reports concerning his creed and theological affiliation. The centers of learning where he was educated, his teachers, and the students he trained were introduced, and both his prose and poetic abilities were highlighted. His authored works—especially those on linguistic sciences—were presented, while it was also emphasized that some of his writings have not survived to the present day. The third and main chapter of the study is devoted to examining al-Baṭalyawsī's position and method within the field of Arabic linguistic sciences. His views and contributions were analyzed across a wide spectrum ranging from phonetics, lexicography, morphology (ṣarf), syntax (naḥw), and rhetoric (balāgha) to prosody (ʿarūḍ), poetry, composition (inshāʾ), etymology (ishtiqāq), semantics (dalāla), and the science of linguistic stipulation (waḍʿ). In this way, both the classical linguistic sciences and their interconnections with semantics, the art of writing, and literary genres were evaluated with illustrative examples. In conclusion, Ibn al-Sīd al-Baṭalyawsī's comprehensive engagement with the Arabic linguistic sciences within the scholarly milieu of al-Andalus demonstrates both his methodological diversity and his lasting contribution to the intellectual tradition. In this respect, al-Baṭalyawsī emerges as an important linguist and man of letters, distinguished by his original approaches to the classification and application of the linguistic sciences, and as a representative of the rich scholarly heritage of al-Andalus.
