Abstract (EN)
Within the scope of the thesis, Ibrahim Oktem Elementary School Building, which is located in Istanbul province, Kadikoy district, Zuhtupasa neighborhood, at the intersection of Recep Peker-Camlibel Mektebi and Rasitpasa Sokak and is registered to 98 slices, 1100 islands and 2 parcel was examined. In this study; the educational institutions in Turkey from the Tanzimat Period to the Republican Period were examined and the historical and architectural characteristics of the building were investigated and the current state of the building was documented in detail. It was aimed to carry out the restitution project in the light of the various written and verbal researches, past repair documents, the data in the structure and to make the necessary interventions in the light of the proposed protection project and to transfer it to future generations. There are so many different pieces of information about the structure used by the different educational institutions from the year it was built to the day-to-day. According to the information given at the foundation that the purpose of the first construction of the building was to be the Rustiye Mektebi. According to the Cadastre records of 1946, it is known that the building was used as a secondary school. According to the information in the 5th volume of Turkey's History of Education it is verified that the building was "Kadiköy 1. Middle School". The build is defined in the sources, usually along with the other structure built in the same period on the opposite side of the road. These two schools were built by the Minister of Education, Zuhtu Pasha, who had a mansion, a mosque and a primary school in Kiziltoprak. In the examinations made, no information about the architecture was found. Due to the fact that the girls and boys can read in separate schools in accordance with the conditions of the term, the school was reserved for the girls and the education was opened with the name "Kuşdili İnas Rustiyesi" in 1897-1898 school year. The present name is Istanbul Anatolian High School (the other building) in the same year is named Erkek Rüştiyesi. In 1911 the school was named as "Kadıköy Numune Rustiyesi" on the grounds of the initiative of Minister of Education Emrullah Efendi. After the declaration of 1908 Constitutional Monarchy, these schools were given the name of the School of Numune and moved to the foreign school building named Sainte Euphemie (now Kemal Atatürk Anatolian High School) in Yel Değirmeni during World War I. When the Ottoman State defeated World War I and the Mondros Armistice was signed, the school was relocated and moved to Ali Şamil Paşa - Rıdvan Paşa Mansion (Erenköy Girls High School). In 1919 it was returned to first building. In the 1919-1920 academic year, primary school was closed and only secondary school classes remained. After the declaration of the Republic, which was brought to Kadıköy Sultan in 1920, there was no change in this status. In 1983, the building was passed through renovation, and named as Ibrahim Oktem who was a former Minister of Education and still serves as Ibrahim Oktem Elementary School. The school building, built on the basis of the architectural characteristics of the period, is a tree floor building. The building has been repaired many times but the last repair took place in 1994. In the second chapter of the study, education and training structures after the Tanzimat period were mentioned and it was aimed to have knowledge about the period which ws the building was built and used. The third chapter, contains information on the location and history of the building. In the fourth chapter, Ibrahim Oktem primary school building has been described in detail. The architectural characteristics of the building, respectively; plan features, facade features, construction techniques, structure and material properties (walls, floors, covering systems, wooden elements, doors and windows), deteriorations and causes of deteriorations in building (deterioration due to natural factors, neglect and improper intervention) were investigated. In the fifth chapter of the study, restitution work of the building has been included. In this context, a chronological analysis was carried out which referred to the attachments and repairs dated to different periods of the structure. Subsequently, the information and documents that constitute data on restitution decisions have been examined. In order to provide data to the restitution, different school buildings built in the same period and especially the building of Istanbul Anatolian High School (opposite building) were examined and the obtained data was used for analogy. Period maps containing the region are examined. Especially the German Blue Maps, the 1936 Pervititch Maps and the old aerial photographs provide important information about the building and its changes. A large number of old photographs and information were obtained from books and theses about Kadıköy and school buildings. In the sixth chapter, the restoration project of the building was included. Within the scope of the project, intervention and suggestions regarding the repair and protection of the structure are explained. Things to be done in the context of protection of construction are covered in the restoration project. In the context of the intervention decisions, it was aimed to protect the parts of the building that were able to reach the day-to-day life with their unique qualities, taking into account the restitution. The altered or lost parts are also required to be restored to their original appearance in accordance with the project. Damages and material information of existing existing building sections were analyzed and required interventions were put forward. It is observed that the construction is still in good condition as the structure. In the face of changing needs over time, the changes experienced due to the space requirement in the building are striking. In the restoration project, the use of the existing structure and the evaluation of the areas in the idle state are presented. It is aimed to make the changing original or additional spaces suitable for the original. In the seventh chapter, the proposals for its use focuses on the necessity of protecting the original function. In spite of increased demand for education, new spaces were constantly needed for the necessary space and personnel. For this reason, the new constructions are far from the conservation consciousness and the existing constructions have been constructed without regard to conservation intention. The building, which is the subject of this thesis, was registered too late and protected as a cultural heritage. During this period, no documentation and protection work has been done to protect the building. With the increase in the number of students, the building was not enough for needs spatially, so new additions were made within the parcel. These additional structures, which print the original conditions of constructions, are incompatible with the facade features and are constructed in consideration of the totally up-to-date needs, are not for conservation purposes, so the projects to reveal the cultural value of the works must be passed on. The spatial organization of construction must be addressed with conservation-oriented approaches to each element and ornament. In addition, additional solutions should be produced to support the physical and mental development of children, which can be trained in a healthy way. In the conclusion section of the study; an evaluation was made on the data obtained from researches, analytical documentation studies and literature researches and the practices recommended for preservation and survival of the structure are explained.
